Was Khrushchev’s limited reform of the Soviet government the main reason for the regime’s growing political stagnation in the years 1964–82?
You will be given this question as a timed essay next Thursday and you can bring in one sheet of A4 paper to help you write the essay. You will be given 45 minutes to write it.
2. Use the sheets you have been given and Holder (p45-49) and Pearson (p39-43) and the article attached to my e mail to fill in the sheets on the NEP (by Wednesday)

1. You should complete the worksheet on the role of nationalism in the Collapse of the Soviet Union.
2. Read page 125 of Pearson very carefully and do the AS-style essay which is explained at the bottom of the page: "How far do you agree with the view that the collapse of the Soviet Union came about because Gorbachev failed to reform the Communist Party?" Use the advice given on Hodder p155-156 and p165-166 to help plan your essay.
3. Also look at the videos on the You Tube channel about the Collapse of the Soviet Union.
4. Revise: use the revision booklets you have been given on the four themes as the basis for your revision. You can also watch some of the videos on the You Tube channel to help consolidate your understanding.
5. Look at the exam advice and sample essays in Pearson p139-151.
6. You should also read the Orlando Figes book.

1. You should complete the worksheet on the role of nationalism in the Collapse of the Soviet Union.
2. Read page 125 of Pearson very carefully and do the AS-style essay which is explained at the bottom of the page: "How far do you agree with the view that the collapse of the Soviet Union came about because Gorbachev failed to reform the Communist Party?" Use the advice given on Hodder p155-156 and p165-166 to help plan your essay.
3. Also look at the videos on the You Tube channel about the Collapse of the Soviet Union.
4. Revise: use the revision booklets you have been given on the four themes as the basis for your revision. You can also watch some of the videos on the You Tube channel to help consolidate your understanding.
5. Look at the exam advice and sample essays in Pearson p139-151.
6. You should also read the Orlando Figes book.

Do the essay: Russia was a great power that was considered backward by most of her contemporaries. How far do you agree with statement about Russia by 1881?
You need to include:
An introduction: setting the scene and highlighting the key areas you are going to examine in the essay.
Main body: paragraphs examining the different aspects of Russia at this time and assessing how "backward" she was e.g.
Government and the way Russia was ruled (national and local)
The bureaucracy
Society
Religion
Economy
Education
Army
Treatment of nationalities
Opposition and politics.
Conclusion: highlighting the areas in which she was and wasn't developed and making an overall judgement on the question.
Remember you need to analyse throughout and not narrate ("tell the story"). Also use precise, detailed evidence to support your arguments.
Homework for Monday, Sept 15th:
1. Re-read the introduction pages of Lynch and Murphy.
2. Complete the worksheet on the reign of Alexander II (a copy can be downloaded from the link below)
3. Explain each of the main themes in Russian history (Change from above, War, Revolution) using pages 9-10 of Murphy.
4. Copy out the timeline on page 6 of Murphy and colour code as many events as you again according to these three themes.
